The muscular tonality in the field animals is expressive in a very painterly approach- they seem to capture a desirable balance between hand-worked manipulation and representational depiction of the subject matter.  I like how the milky white cows serve as directional brackets to the front facing darker one in the center of the composition.   The appearance of multiple focal points creates a dialogue, and pulls attention from what would otherwise be a relatively static central focus. The abstraction of his face is also absorbing; as it holds an ambiguous primacy devoid of specific identifying features.  The slight blur of the overall scene ultimately reads as roused movement, while providing targeted areas of crisp contrast for the viewers’ eyes to comfortably rest.
