Curator’s Comment:

Three Woman Eating gracefully conveys a familiar domestic scene, with a reflective intimacy despite the lack of specificity in the individual features.  In some ways the painting is as much about the process of blocking in chunks of color and light as it is about the scene it describes.  The matriarch is centrally placed- as visually evidenced by her grey glimmers of hair and crumpled posture.  She is bathed by ambient natural light, preserving her as the focal point of the painting. The other female figures appear engrossed in food preparations, but again I don’t feel the work is a celebration of food as much as it is about the tenderness and informality of easy familial connection.  The small blocky shapes of plates and bowls formally reiterate the line of framed portraits along the upper right corner of the composition. Overall, I like the slight aerial position, which further summons the viewer to the table.
