In Clear Waters...

In Clear Waters, 18.5x26.5 - by Judy Robbins
A reductive ink monoprint using oil based inks and stencils for the shapes of the fish. My work seems to revolve around nature in most cases. I imagined what a school of fish would look like underwater and they also represent the passion for fishing held by my late brother.

I’m taken by the various additive and subtractive processes you seamlessly employ in your prints and paintings. In Clear Waters is particularly engaging, as the complex textural and color choices are somewhat reminiscent of antique textiles. I like that the pervasive diagonal movement in the fish motif is subtly altered by the dashed lines in the muted background. These reddish lines add an element of intermittent if not erratic gestural movement that isn’t innately present in the bodies of the fish; through they’re echoed by the higher chroma pink streak traveling through their scales. The more recent canyon collages you’ve posted arrive at a much bolder sensitivity, with the striated edges of the papers providing vivid contract and direction. While they can be viewed as distinctly disparate formal approaches, the attention to decoration and design in nature is evident, as is the relationship between patterned body and supportive ground.
