Curator’s Comment:
Lauren, I’m thrilled to see your work on the site! I was really moved by this piece when I saw it on exhibit in Salt Lake City this summer. It’s one of those pieces that appear somewhat innocuous at first glance because of the simple graphics, and then hits home with content. The layering of the soft resolution imagery with contrasting text provides a ghost like background. The figurative (child) image floats to the foreground once the conceptual realization of genetic coding and selection is made. Rather than keeping the piece in predictably feminine pink, the green hues move me along the horizontal composition, and suggest natural growth or evolution in contrast to the artificiality of the smaller primary text shapes. The intentionally strong repetition of subject also advocates a heartbeat, staying on message. I also really like the more abstract work entitled Pain. Without knowing as much about the intended content, the work still communicates directly to me on a visceral, instinctive level. The dominant central circular shape reads as an oculus, or spatial void; perhaps alluding to an open wound in the context of the title. But the pinkish and warmer brown hues are also disturbingly fleshy against the harsher black shapes and brushstrokes. I’m most intrigued seeing you work back and forth between design oriented formats and more painterly expression.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
