Curator’s Comments:
I enjoy these upbeat Dada-esque works because of their light yet subversive humor. The portraits of noblemen or women with Elizabethan collars are particularly apropos with regard to the redirection or sublimation of economic class. Sliced is particularly effective and entertaining with its juxtaposition of vertical stripes and red-orange cherry tomato slices. The negation of the figure’s eyes with the vegetable is sardonic and yet it somehow manages to become a more modern hipster update than an affront. Perhaps because the cleaved tomato manages to simulate lids and pupils, it doesn’t totally erase the perception of the figure’s sight. I am also amused by the photograph of a still life installation titled Yayoi Kusama was here. While not as richly layered in its humor of identity and erasure as the portraits, it’s a clever commentary on the ease of recognition in contemporary art culture.
