Thank you.
Curator’s Comment:
Liar, Liar is wonderfully subversive in its admonishing text within bright, candy colored preciousness. I like the three-dimensionality of the figure, with his quirky costume and mocking, cartoon flames. The centralized circular format also suggests advertising, but of course the work gives way to the sheer pleasure of banded color and surface manipulation. I like the somewhat arbitrary riveting/nailing or splicing of solid areas of color, as the assembly of the metal adds a textural concern. After all, the craft of these constructions is adeptly deceiving, as the viewer comes to them with an expectation of joviality or celebratory adulation as readily understood from Latin or folk ritablos. Indeed, the pieces utilizing the Virgin or Dia de los Muertos (If You’re Happy, For My Dead Mother, etc.) embrace the genre in totality. For this reason I’m also more drawn to Ashtray 2. It’s quite unexpected. The assertion of the familiar ( if not disdainful) subject into a position of a heralded object requiring patience and care to fashion is quite humorous. And of course all of the works here offer a feast of color and lavish decoration.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
