Curator’s Comment:
I can see that Brighton was painted several years ago, and yet it caught my attention as it came up under currently popular imagery on the site. I remember admiring the juicy brushwork and deft abstraction in some of your other figurative works. Brighton similarly transcends its subjects in a sublime narrative, mingling nostalgic, contemporary and vaguely rural influences. The young baseball players have a wholesome and yet not completely realized individualism; the small detailing of the orange edge of the cap on the closer figure adds to his physical substance and shy demeanor. The cap points us past his shadowed features to the juvenile ‘Monkey” shirt. The open expanse of the land is beautifully evoked as well, and then broken up in muted color blocks. Sharing the same color palette, the figures are decidedly of, rather than apart from the earth and sky. The scale of the piece isn’t indicated, but I imagine it has a considerable presence in person. In any case, I do hope you continue to post new paintings on the site.
