Composed of papers dyed by me, repurposed watercolors and monoprint and found images this watery scene shows two birds, one rising to leave, one dancing on gold discs - thus the title.

Curator’s Comments:

While You Were Gone has a dreamy, otherworldly feel, as the cranes appear to float between structural (paper) passages. The gold discs add to the mystical sensation, calling to mind water lilies acting as portholes to another time or place. But the sinuous paper reeds are atmospherically flatter, offering a more decorative secondary motif to the space.  I appreciate how the birds themselves are to some extent camouflaged in the picture, causing the viewer to search through the marsh for signs of active life.  In doing so it occurs to me the entire surface of the collage carries significant movement while the birds are the relatively static elements.  The harmonious analogous color scheme contributes further to the reflective calm, successfully blurring the edges of the pieces from multiple disparate sources.
