Curator’s Comments:
Full Green Lady appeared randomly on the site for me today, and I enjoy the fresh and straightforward approach to the subject. The simplified abstraction and flattening of the space takes on an approach that approximates folk art, but the graphic nature of the lines in the figure and ground add a layer of visual complexity. At first I thought the piece was a relief print, because of the strength of the linear value pattern in defining the forms and background. The lines and unified monochromatic palette also contribute to the harmony of the image. The slight shift in the green lady’s posture and gaze is curious. It serves to break the strong bilateral symmetry of the composition, and psychologically looks as though she’s contemplating the viewer. I see the painting was created several years ago, and do hope you post new work on the site.
