Curator’s Comment:

You’ll Get Use to It is a fascinating allegorical work- it had a formal integrity that’s aligned with great historical narratives, but it maintains a decidedly contemporary flavor.  The limited color range of warm sepias against a cool blue ground helps administer a timeless quality to the figures. The figures tying the blindfolds around the heads of their submissively lowered counterparts exhibit careful restraint.  They are not forcible aggressors, but seem determined in their uncertain (unpleasant?) task.  That dissimilar ages and genders represented may add to the vague reference to societal pressure.  Because of their diversity I cannot interpret their actions as male or female competition, hazing, or other violent experience, nor do I read any sexual connotation into their roles.  This could be an area to explore in future works.  The lack of specificity may be a missed opportunity to address a pressing moral or ethical concern, but also I respect the decision to avoid a more heavy handed or edifying slant.  The choice of blindfolding all of the participants invites the viewer to partake in the experience- becoming a willing participant rather than simply an impassive or casual observer.
