Portfolios: Abstract Acrylic Paintings

Curator’s Comment:
Zombie caught my eye because of its unexpected relationships between seemingly accidental mark making/drips and more controlled linear imagery. The pink skull at the upper left of the painting sets the mood for the gestural cascade of brightly contrasting paint, and infuses the work with corporeal associations. (The orange-ish fleshy toned form to the right of the skull in particular takes on a figurative overtone.) The small bits of empty white/negative space keep the work from appearing too dense and macabre- one searches for the light among the gritty darkness and happily finds it. I also find it interesting that you appear to have two distinct approaches in your portfolio, between layered drawn works emphasizing line and pattern, and a more aggressive gestural painterly expression. Zombie successfully bridges the two.
