ARTIST STATEMENT

WHY DO YOU MAKE YOUR ART?

Gathering raw pieces of steel into an unique object develops in me a will to struggle to get it done; it gets my creative juices flowing becoming an exhilarating experience.
Also witnessing visual delights such as heated metal vivid colors, mesmerizing welding light and beading makes my art a unique experience.
I express feelings or sensations, there isn't a wrong and a right message. Each person takes something a little different from the same piece and I'm happy with that.
Welding a metal sculpture is the vehicle for translating inner visions, raw feelings or states to outer reality hence freeing my imagination and providing many opportunities for happy accidents.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE IT?

My influences are first and foremost everything I see, feel and experience such as other artists work translated in metal shape, nature as well as any other shapes surrounding me, anything visual that struck a deep chord within me.

WHAT DOES IT SIGNIFY OR REPRESENT?

Welding is an accomplishment, it engages in a form of self-expression that pushes me out of my comfort zone with the numerous constraints of the material. Each piece expresses a short story or an experience.
Welding is a place somewhere, a world where time doesn't exist anymore.
My work is meaningful to me because it is true and honest it comes from deep inside with no reserve.

HOW DO YOU MAKE IT?

What I do is not always intentional. I weld from the inside out. My unconscious is the undisputed project manager.
I'm never without my digital camera and several notebooks in all my bags so I am constantly drawing, taking notes or pictures and sometimes the drawings are left in the notebook and other times they develop into more in-depth ideas and later on project.
But more concretely now, I make it by dumpster diving or by visiting steel manufacturers, by plasma cutting, welding, and grinding!
