Artist Bio/Statement:
Originally from California, David lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles before moving to New York in 1999. He studied art and design at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. It is there that he began studying landscape and figure painting, working regularly in both watercolor and oil pastel.
Since coming to New York, David has been developing a body of work inspired by the organic geometries found in the natural and scientific world. While painting abstract works based on particle tracks (bubble chamber diagrams used by physicists to study the collisions of subatomic particles) the simple beauty of the curves and spirals led him back to the figure, seeking parallels in the human form and the activation of space implied in every pose. His influences come from science, literature, art and design and the relationships that can be found between them.
The Fractured Figure series (2011) explores elements of graphic design and urban environments as a means to disrupt the conventional figure and set up tensions between abstraction and figuration, chaos and repose, signal and noise. It's also a lot of fun to paint. Enjoy!
