Artist Statement

My work is inspired by botanical and zoological elements.  Having neither the patience nor inclination to ‘literally’ depict the world around me, I sculpt simplified lines to represent an entity and connote an emotion.

I wish to bring pause to those who view my art; to initiate reflection, however momentarily, on the piece seen before them; and to have viewers depart more lighthearted and refreshed as a result.  My work is unapologetically angst-free.

I’m drawn to the delicious juxtaposition of opposites.  The mediums I use to create my art are metal and glass:  one material is durable, the other is quite delicate.  Hard, inflexible steel is momentarily softened with fire, allowing itself to be shaped into a new form.  Glass allows light through and is always in danger of breaking.

As a metal artist, working with the element iron ties me to the earth and makes me feel grounded.  The metal I sculpt and manipulate is my legacy, tangible and lasting after my departure from this world.  The glass in my lighting pieces is fragile, thereby a reminder of the ephemeral nature of existence, replaceable but never an exact substitute for what existed before.
