Curator's Comments:

On this fourth of July in America, I searched the site for works inspired by the concept of the country. American Gothic asked more questions of me than it provided answers, in both image and accompanying text. The red-orange hued abstraction conjures a map-like disbursement of shared and social entities- cities, towns, or ideas, connected loosely by proximity and shape correspondence.  However, I also detect an underling unrest, or conflict in the space as the squares jostle for alignment. I interpret the question you pose about American Gothic- “Are the gothic arches present in our culture in some way?” as an insinuation there could be a type of social scaffolding within the culture.  It’s an interesting painting, and concept, to consider within this tenuous balance between order and chaos.
