Curator's Comments:

On this fourth of July, I searched the site for works inspired by America. Freedom came up first, and confronts the viewer with the fraught and turbulent history of Black America. The poignant photos within the collage offer glimpses into suffering as well as human triumph.  I find the warm brown glaze over the composite picture unifies the disparate elements, and helps the piece speak in one voice. But on some formal level, the warm finish also quiets the space, and calms what could conceivably otherwise be upheld as a clash of contrasting, troubling images. It is a strong piece, for it functions to hold up a mirror to the society in which it as created.
