Curator’s Comments:

This dark vanitas-inspired piece Vanitas 2- Preservation, came up randomly on the site today.  I was drawn in by the heavy shadows and luminous color of the fruit.  The iridescent green fabric enhances the mood of the theatrical setting of the still life.  The shift in scale between the cherries and asparagus causes the viewer to move back and forth between the positive and negative space, trying to reconcile the vantage point within the picture plane.  The lone cabbage leaf in the upper left corner nicely balances the visual weight of the more saturated, chromatic forms below, but it also is set apart in what appears to be a collage type inclusion.  I wonder if this actually is a composite of separate photographs.  The other Baroque inspired vanitas objects (Five Senses, and Beauty) conversely appear to be created within a single, continuous frame.  Perhaps there’s something about the act of preservation that encourages the gathering of perfect specimens rather than composing the more mundane.  In either case, I do hope you continue to post more of these sensory-rich pieces on the site.
