Curator’s Comments:

This seemingly untitled work shares the dramatic chiaroscuro and saturated color I’d admired in paintings in the past.  But unlike the expressive depictions of the supernatural/religious figures in Entombment, or Buddha, the subject matter of this piece heightens the scale and drama of the profane. Media and dimensions aren’t described in a site caption, but the surface of the work appears to be a highly articulated impasto application of paint.  The broken color in the face of the child is particularly dramatic and unexpected, as it abruptly shifts between highly textured warm and cool hues. While the subject of a young girl contemplating butterflies while lying the grass would normally conjure a peaceful if not idyllic scene, there is something vaguely unsettling about the density and scale of the flying insects. It’s a dream-like space, but an exquisitely vivid and permeating dream.
