Curator’s Comments:

Insane Stillness undoubtedly takes on further significance as the days stretch out in our global pandemic. Posted several years ago, the painting could have been easily overlooked, surrounded by brighter, more colorful graphic works.  The dark brooding color of the ink is somewhat relived by the blue wash of sky, but the piece overall solicits somber reflection. I interpret the figure as standing over a grave of sorts- the flowers rising from a black burial mound.  The tree on the left takes on a secondary figural attribute- bending in homage or grief over the slightly stooped man.  I like the thin scribbled black lines throughout the work.  They evoke a tension in the space, and visual connection to what is intuitively felt.  Your floral works on the site provide a contrasting mood of bright optimism, but it’s this work that I keep coming back to for consolation.
