Inspired by a trip to Venice, the fish are embellished with millifiore patterns and other designs. The metallic paints add dimension. Like most of my paintings, it has a handmade frame that I designed.

Curator’s Comments:

Lush color meets jubilant design in Under the Sea.  I enjoyed reading your note about the millifiore patterns among the designs on the fish, as they reminded me of mosaic. The twisting tentacles moving through the composition inject the work with a fluid dynamic, and counterbalance the directional movement of the small schools of fish.  While the painting at first presents as very colorful, longer viewing reveals a more limited and orchestrated color palette of blue-greens and yellow ochre, punctuated by small amounts of vermilion. The undulating frame, as you note to be of your design, does appear crafted to intimate ocean waves.  I see the work was created many years ago, and hope you have continued with this aesthetic approach. It’s a wonderful balance between idealized realism supported within a lavishly decorative motif.
