Curator’s Comments:

This new Covid-19 inspired piece is quite arresting.  Rather than conjuring known biological agents or illustrations of the pandemic, this ghostly figure radiates a dim halo of grey haze.  The aura around him also appears to hold back, or frame, an even darker encroaching field of dark blue hues.  I’m curious about the anatomical references within this figural abstraction.  The body’s workings appear to accentuate heart and entrails- or, the body could be simply comprised of a set of inflated lungs.  Branching lines extending from the head open the body up to the ominous dark cloud, while also intimating nerve branches. The lack of specificity, again I believe, is part of the psychological intrigue. It’s nice to view the companion piece- Covid-19 Hope along with Despair. The extension of the arms of the abstracted figure within the larger mandala shape projects the idea of opening our world back up, rather than the social current constriction. Thanks for making and sharing these new pieces.
