Curator’s Comments:
The small scale of these insect/machine hybrid paintings no doubt adds to the jewel like presentation of chain linked caterpillars and other tiny jet-powered wings. They have a certain, undeniable “cute” quality, which is tempered with the amalgamation of the unexpected. The pink and blue dappled coloration of the Caterpillar Cy-bug forms a bold primary color relationship with the gold bands, while the overall form remains wholly organic. I like the way in which it seems to fold into itself with a strange animated expression. The armored ant has a similar cartoon like quality, but in this piece I recognize the insect immediately, and so it doesn’t have the same sort of engagement and puzzlement for the viewer as the caterpillar. Nonetheless, the series would make for great children’s book illustrations. While clearly in the realm of fantasy, each creation is presented with clarity of vision and a simplicity of expression that I imagine would generate a wide appeal from young viewers.
