Thank you for inviting me again to view this new piece. I always enjoy seeing the directions you travel in your sculpture, and the various shifts in color, surface, and relationship between forms and materials. Insignia does not disappoint. The opposing diagonal trajectory of the linear elements is familiar to your artistic practice, as is the joining of the rectangular pieces to the projecting ‘arms’. The grind finish isn’t something I’m accustomed to seeing in your work, and believe it suits this piece. The surface at once appears eroded- almost a patina forming- along with slightly reflective properties. It therefore appears to expand and contract in space through intrinsic, interior movement. I really enjoyed the adjacent piece Moguls you posted back in March, and it’s interesting to compare the two pieces. By contrast, Moguls enjoys a stronger sense of stability, both through even placement of the leg supports, and the rather heavy horizontal mass. The painted aluminum also appears to absorb light, offering a stoic appearance. While Insignia shares its economic aesthetic, one could imagine this sculpture is more figural than industrial. The light color of the brushed surface also visually melds with the white and grey marble base. The dimensions you have noted are very small, on the scale of a maquette. I see you’ve noted the piece was constructed from scrap materials. I’m glad this scale and process have encouraged your experimentation, and I look forward to it.
