Watching these two Australian shepherds romp and play on the beach in Ventura was terrific fun for me. I know it was fun for them, too! I knew I would be painting them at some point using the photo references I had taken.

Pure Fun certainly captures the exuberance of the dogs run on the beach, but does so in an interestingly sparse space.  I enjoy the muted local color palette, which somewhat downplays the blue diagonal line of the water in exchange for grounding the animals on a soft sandy ground.  The shapes of their bodies in motion nicely counter each other- from the striding pose on the shepherd on the left to the more compressed position of the dog closing in on the ball.  The violet shadows under them serve to further anchor them in the composition within the subtle waves of water and shore.  While your caption speaks to the photographic source used for the painting, I like that the piece moves beyond straight photo realism to convey a more personalized if somewhat simplified/abstracted scene.  The image is fresh and alive.
