Curator’s Comments:
Of your Rock and Root Series, I’m most drawn to this piece (Ar6) because of its straddled line between pictorial representation through landscape, and sculptural/physical depiction. It’s as if it’s of nature rather than illustrating it. The tactile striations between cooler blue, green and violet hues are also atmospherically suggestive of a water line or distant hills, while the crossing vertical spread of lines intimates oppositional growth. But as the gestural lines move wholly trough the square format, this piece could also read as a detail to a larger, macrocosmic whole. The two subsequent images that follow are closely aligned in compositional structure and color scheme, but the verticality of the central ‘tree’ shape appears more stable in these; less a sweep of movement than a stabilizing biological entity. I also enjoy viewing these pieces among your other more realistic landscapes. Together, it offers the viewer changing perspectives that reveal the abstraction and visceral connections to the geographic/geological world.
