It was famous impressionists such as Monet and Pissaro that inspired me first. I tossed my tiny detail brushes and forced myself to larger canvases and looser brush strokes. My intent was to simply and respectfully capture the essence of my subject in a painterly way.
I pursued under-paintings and palette choices in landscapes which led to a study of trees and foliage. For variety, I painted still life which evolved to a personal study of color theory.
Experimenting with color, temperatures and values led to my discovery that a simple adjustment in either of these areas could change the mood dramatically. This revelation fueled my enthusiasm and coupled with my looser brush strokes a new personal painting style began to emerge.
I tend to gravitate toward strong value contrasts with an obsessive need to push the limit in light and shadow. My little diversion with still life grew into a series of mini paintings and a new focus genre -my current obsession.
My work is ever changing. As stated by Bruce Barton,
“When you are through changing, you are through.”
