To Resident Curator Kristen T Woodward: Thank you!
Curator’s Comments:
Economical Justified is appealing in its simplicity of sculptural form communicating a complex system. The object appears to be a life vest because of the plastic surface- I’m unclear if the interior is a contrasting cloth or foam material? But the printed text slyly manipulates our read on customs forms, and other declarations in relation to the (economic) title. The vest also puts forth a sense of an official- subconsciously by the documents as well as in the reference to official/municipal or police uniforms, and also in the graphic printing of “authority” beneath the red star. The painting entitled Peace similarly conjures global conflict within the childlike blocks. While they clearly advocate a desire for peace and love, the graphic “no war” text brings struggle to the forefront of the composition and the viewers’ minds. I like the openness and light color in the designs. They are attractive on a visual level, and yet move beyond simple primary color and shape.
