Curator’s Comments:
I really enjoy this new series of figurative works. It’s somewhat curious to reconcile the more economic treatment of the figure within the active space when compared to your earlier highly expressive paintings. In fact, the bright white of the figure makes her appear cut out of the picture altogether- a non-entity removed from the living, thriving scene. For me it also has the feeling of early Post-War Surrealism- as Max Ernst and others experimented with Decalcomania, the feminine Eros was similarly reduced to exquisite gesture. As a Sketch contains a particularly dynamic tension- frazzled energy is embodied in a thinly scribbled lime green, as seen moving through the chair. By contrast the figure is delicately perched above the form, folding into a slightly metallic or reflective fabric. I also like the warm tonality of the negative space. It offers visual rest and softens the active angles within the scene. Figure Introverted may be an even more desirable piece, but I prefer in it in the context of the other images, as the figurative element is reduced even further to a minimalistic shape. The vibrant orange background saturates the space, and presses against the strongly articulated and organic contours of the stooped, bowed subject. This imparts an emotional primacy.
