Curator’s Comments:
I like the organization of these new pieces. The organic forms in this painting (IMG 4926) in particular have an interesting relationship to vegetable matter as still life objects simultaneously revealing the cellular growth and transformation of their origin plants. The large and colorful carrot on the far right arguably anchors the piece in representation and visual weight, allowing for microcosmic/macrocosmic recognition of the small compartments. I can’t quite make out the character of the red-violet color block in the center. It suggests a book in the context of plant diagrams, but it is more abstract that the other objects. The shift in background color also creates an interesting divide in the not quite still life/landscape. It could be a simple formal device to break up the figure-ground relationship, but also supposes a timeline of growth.
