Portfolios: Digital and Mixed Media Collage, Enduring Work

Curator’s Comments:
This digital collage came up randomly on the site today, and like many of your mixed media works, imbeds more complex imagery within simple domestic forms. The title Magnetism evokes a sense of attraction spelled out within the piece’s nostalgic text. It’s only when the viewer comes in for a closer look that we appreciate the duality of “repulsion” in the grayed down graphic. As in many of your collages I’ve admired in the past, the duality of gender is expressed in simple gestures and cropped figural elements. Immediately signaled in the giving and receiving hands, the reflection of the full figures in the coffee pot enhance the presence of gendered roles. The pink floral pattern further serves to connect the larger elements, and softens the strong diagrammatic elements. The format of print media through magazines also tapes into socially collective ideas about good housekeeping, and similar house and family pursuits. I’m wondering if a small amount of humor is intended in the irony? These archetypes play into a certain tradition, which may or may not be missed by the viewer. I enjoy the richness of your work, and hope you continue to post new pieces on the site.
