Curator’s Comments:
It’s interesting that this particular quilted piece ( P1050059 ) is gaining in recognition now, despite having being created several years ago. I certainly appreciate why it has moved up on the site’s sort by popularity of work, and concur with the previous remarks about great texture and mystery. I enjoy the pictorial nature of the figures within the patterned fabric- alternating the viewer’s understanding of flat decorative space versus the spatial overlapping of implied forms. The compartmentalized sections of jewel toned hues also connect these spheres of interest. Deep blue and violet satin strips create a repeated color pattern, while smaller segments slow down the visual movement in the more defined areas. The cropped figure with the tie and flowered lapel is both iconographically familiar and mysterious. While the flower is not repeated as a motif, it nonetheless relates to our collective aesthetic conventions of floral textiles. It’s a smart inclusion, bridging tradition with a more contemporary narrative.
your picture has a great cloth texture and i like the mystery in the picture.
