Event Description

National Deadline: April 1, 2015 – Highly regarded Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, in association with the Smithsonian Institution, announces a call for artists for “Heroes & Villains: exploring archetypes through art”, a national juried exhibition on display June 19 – August 23, 2015, at the spacious Main Gallery of Annmarie’s award-winning Murray Arts Building.

All media welcome; small to large-scale installations; new media encouraged; indoor and outdoor works accepted; cash awards to be presented.

This exhibit invites artists to submit works that celebrate the heroes and villains that populate history, literature, popular culture, folklore, mythology, psychology, and other realms of human experience and expression. As an artist, where do you find inspiration? In the protagonist or the antagonist, or in the many shades of gray in between? Do historical figures fascinate you, or do you turn to fictional characters for your subject matter? Whether you look to history books or comic books, or your own fantastical imagination, this exhibit welcomes artists that explore the complexities and nuances of heroes and villains.

CASH AWARDS
Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Juror(s) will review installed works (not application images) for award selection. Typically there are at least three awards. All award-winning artists will receive an invitation for a solo or group show.

THE EXHIBITION SPACE
The exhibit will be installed in the spacious Main Gallery of Annmarie’s award-winning Murray Arts Building. With over 4000 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electric outlets located in the walls, floor and ceiling, the Main Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations. As Annmarie includes a thirty acre sculpture garden, a few outdoor works will also be included in the exhibit.

JURY & SELECTION PROCESS
The exhibit will be juried by a 1-2 member panel; typically, one member of the panel is drawn from the Smithsonian Institution. Artists will be selected based on skill, technique, and originality. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2015. Artists will be notified of final acceptance status via email on or before April 17, 2015.

ENTRY FEE
Artists must submit a $25 non-refundable entry fee ($20 for Annmarie members) for up to 4 entries.

SALE OF WORKS
Should a sale resulting from the exhibition occur, Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.
