I am a Danish artist and the development in global communication and the expansion of art across the borders gives me some problems concerning information, because it is rather difficult to find out how the art life is organized in the different countries – and I am interested in expanding abroad.

In Denmark the most normal way for an emerging artist trying to succeed is to pass one or several the four state recognized juried exhibitions. There are a lot juried exhibitions here, but state recognized are the most important. Gallery representation can also be of significance, but that is not as important as the juried exhibitions.

I have been represented on many juried exhibitions in Denmark – this summer also one of the four finest, but I am a little in doubt about how the art life is organized in your country. If anybody has some information concerning the following questions, it will be a great help to me.

1. What are the most important steps in building a career as an artist in your country.

2. Most important juried exhibitions

3. Most important galleries to be represented by.

4. Bests artists unions.

Thank you very much. I am very grateful for your help.

Best regards

Hi Sven, I've lived in the US and in Israel and neither of those countries have the organized structure you're describing in Denmark. In Israel, we do have 'expert' art committees to evaluate an artist. Since I haven't been through that process yet (I just moved back here), I don't know if it's based on skill or what. And I'm not sure if it really benefits your career or not. I can let you know in a couple of years.

In the US, the art market is a casino. Read the book "The Twelve Million Dollar Shark," which talks about who gets into stratospheric prices, while still alive, and why. But I warn you, have an airsickness bag close by. People whom I've seen make a decent living in the States usually open their own gallery in a resort area, find a style and subject people like and which they, or their factory assistants, can crank out pretty quickly.

There aren't any 'best' galleries or artists' unions that will insure your success in the US or Israel. You must find a gallery whose style matches yours. From there it's having a client base, good marketing, sales ability, and a lot of luck. Talent and skill aren't always necessary.

Hi Laurel

Thank you very much for your fine answer. As I read it the most important thing is to find a gallery and work from that. I will read the book and ok, I am used to a lot of things so maybe the airsickness bag is not need. Anyway I wish you luck with your career and tanks again

Sven

All the best to you, too. I mentioned galleries at resorts, because I heard a sales statistic which said 90% of 'regular people', not serious art collectors, buy art when they're on vacation. That's why they have auctions on ships.

Hi Laurel

Never heard that before. Interesting. Will be back when I know something more. Just now living at the seashore en Denmark, where it is rather cold and bad weather.

best regards

Sven
