Curator’s Comments:
The degree of abstraction in this new painting Misty Morning Woods offers a slightly surreal forested landscape, as the trees appear to become uprooted and pulled towards the central area of golden yellow light. I find myself contemplating if this movement accentuates a normal growth pattern, or suggests a strong pull from an unseen supernatural source. While you identify the work as a fantasy painting, I find it interesting that the representation still mirrors a naturalistic scene to a significant degree. The rugged textural surface of the ground anchors the visual weight of the trees. But the cool blue hues add drama as they defy atmospheric perspective. The haziness of the edges also evokes a dreamlike state - I find this quality taken to more of an effective extreme in River Scene with Waterfall and the painting of a similar subject simply identified as 02. This slight blurring of the subject in these later works draws me into their cloud like formations and beautiful shifts of turquoise and brown.
