This final New York scene delights the viewer with surprisingly active movement amidst familiar representation.  I’m impressed with the highly realistic representation of the central figures fluidly sharing the same space with brushier, expressive interpretations of other urban forms such as cars and buildings.  Rather than providing gradually dissolving edges for atmospheric perspective, the picture frame freezes selective areas of focus, which are supported by swirling gestural marks.  Choppy squares of signage frequently break the organic flow of the painting, and add an underlying supporting rhythm.  The pavement provides another respite for expressive and impressionistic color.  I enjoy how it rises up, and blends unexpectedly with the foreground.
