Curator’s Comments:
This large scale piece has an enjoyable formal relationship between the tectonic/architectural elements and what appears to be pure painterly expression. The division of positive and negative space also yields an interesting visual tension. The strong diagonal plane jutting from bottom left to center of the composition leaves the viewer partially cantilevered in the open space, and then brought back in with the curvilinear scroll design at the bottom of the piece. The yellow ochre of the overhang in contrast feels heavy- one can get lost in the lush paint application. I view the blue circle in the bottom right as a punchy counterbalance to the blue cubic structure to the left. (Some sort of booth?).The linear divisions in the grating further add visual interest while subdividing of the space. I appreciated your reference to an acrylic gel medium in the description of media- it illuminates the areas of semi-transparent color I’m seeing throughout the piece.
