Landscape within is a luscious, rousing painting that nicely exemplifies figural expressionism.  The duality of the two abstract figures presents as either biological twins, or the dichotomous psychological cleaving of the individual human psyche. The strong primary color associations skillfully balance the scrawled gestural line work, giving the painting a raw and almost animalistic property while maintaining compositional rhythm and organization.  The repeated circular drawn shapes in the top of the piece go a long way in establishing a solid figure-ground relationship, as they echo the two dominant focal elements of the figures heads.  I’m particularly attracted to the manner in which the figures external contours contain the erratic marks.  This containment is also evidenced in the figures with locked hands, and other works.
