Curator's Comments:

This piece (03) Into Sacred Right, has appeared randomly on the site more than once for me in recent days, and each time I view it I find myself intrigued, but no more cognizant of what is transpiring between the figures. I’ve enjoyed your other paintings in the past which range from straight, possibly photography- based representation, to much more abstract and surreal images that intermingle figures and ground.  This painting doesn’t appear to draw directly from either approach, but is a more surreal distillation of representation and flat, decorative space. I enjoy the way the back-facing figures dissolve into the greenery; maintaining their hard edges and contrasting colors just as pieces of green organic material (foliage?) breaks off and moves behind them. Viewed within your portfolio entitled Religion of the Earth, I view the interaction as a sacred immersion in terra firma. In this context, and viewing this painting randomly I thought maybe the “Right” in the title should have been “rite”, but then discovered the paired “Left” piece! The visual coupling of two pairs of different figures adds another layer of mystery to this work. I see that it was created many years ago, but still draws attention and wonder.
