Curator’s Comments:

View from JFK Airport is a moody, somber painting offering up feelings of both loneliness and beautiful repose.  The viewer is positioned just ahead of the expanse of the landscape, as if on a precipice of darkness and light.  The small pinpoints of the street lights act as beacons to welcome and navigate through the darkened space.  In fact it actually takes a couple of seconds to adjust to the dimmed light in the shadowed street patterns, much as natural eyes would adjust to dusk.  But then the muted scene opens up to a brilliant setting sun.  The square format of the painting also adds an interesting visual tension, as the eye is pulled upward despite the contrast of the opposing horizon.
