Curator’s Comments:
I find the extended verticality of this painting works remarkably well with the patterned red and blue primary color palette and circular overlapping motifs. At first glance it seems like a purely representational, if abundantly decorative, nature painting. But the ornamental geometric shapes dispersed throughout the background add a multifaceted and unexpected layering of imagery. The thin linear bar shapes also impart a particularly graphic and contrasting geometric element, somewhat reminiscent of chop marks incorporated in traditionally printed Asian scrolls. However, I see the opacity of color and saturation of hue as distinctly Western in aesthetic, as is the slightly competing obstruction of the birds and cherries. Both vie for primacy in the otherwise economic landscape, with their lush color and full chiaroscuro modeling. I also enjoy the nonobjective stencil based works in your portfolio- in close proximity to this one. They move past the illustration of a subject and appear to inject a personal vision into formal design choices.
