Curator’s Comments:
This seemingly untitled work came up randomly on the site today, and its fresh approach to color and subject matter caught and held my attention. The stark contrast with the background gives this piece a clean, graphic quality. The energetic designs also have a Pop sensibility, and so I’m reminded of Warhol’s earlier illustrations as a shoe designer. I find that my eye shifts back and forth between the pair, searching for similarities and differentiation within the active patterns. This varying visual congruity nicely balances order and surprise. The thin blue wash functioning as a cast shadow of course is handled quite differently from the shoes, but it functions to ground the objects in space. Looking back through your other paintings on the site, I recalled admiring and commenting on the crane flying within a text and patterned blue sky (102_2412). I would really have to stretch to see the same hand making both pieces- your dexterity in approach is appreciated. Please do consider posting new work on the site. I would like to see how your studio practice has evolved.
