Curator’s Comment:
There’s so much going on in these paintings- layers upon layers of sporadic, gestural strokes build up decidedly conflicted foundations. I especially like this particular piece because of the larger expanses of saturated color, and the creaminess of the white. The linear elements cut through the larger sections, but the more subtle color contrast between line and shape creates shallow depth. The broken line/dashes around the border provide containment to the bigger, visceral swashes of pink and violet as they slow down the eye at the edge. The square picture plane also creates an interesting pressure, and friction to the piece.
I also admire the open compositions which hearken to Miro’s early surrealist experiments with automatism and the subconscious, such as Concertino 19, and Cantate 12. These pieces are gentle and deliberate in their mark making, and offer a quiet, though still primal pictographic arrangement. The appearance of layered, painted over smears of color suggests a more dramatic structure under their quieted surface.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
