The Gate is a mystifying painting- there’s a strong spatial illusion despite the breakdown of patches of disparate color and a radially contrasted value pattern.  I’m attracted to the raw gestural qualities of your work, which at times appear to be tempered by the choice of more traditional subject matter.  It’s as if the representation of architectural elements or a landscape provides a visual anchor for expressive, almost anarchistic painterly investigation. The directionality of the marks and sgraffito scratches in The Gate lead the viewer through the broken space, but it’s easy to linger, and get lost in the smaller textural patches.  The adjacent painting, titled Interior, overall has a slightly more controlled construct, but again the aggressive mark making is held together by tenuous grid lines.  The warm/hot color pattern is another unifying force, but the intensity of the chroma injects movement and tenacious energy into an otherwise still subject.
