Curator’s Comments:
This is an interesting series of portraits. I keep coming back to this dark, blurred out untitled image- I hope the visual effect of light and shadow in this drawing wasn’t unintentional from the lighting when photographed! The value pattern imbues the subject with mystery, and also makes me contemplate the idea of a fleeting light capturing a form. The downcast eyes of the subject reinforce the downward stokes of the shadow, while her black clothing nicely anchors the bottom of the composition. I’m also attracted to the piece entitled The Two Sisters. Of the few works containing multiple figures, there is an ineffable psychological tension between them. While both sisters directly confront the viewer, they are not interacting in a comfortable way with each other. The smaller figure on the right sets back in the pictorial space, and appears particularly uncomfortable in her upward gaze. While the graphic pattern behind them breaks up the space and draws us in, there is wariness in their expression.. The piece captures a very natural and honest reaction to being observed.
