Curator’s Comment:
You have a tremendously fertile portfolio of images. I enjoy seeing the stylized handling of the figure in the environment in your work, while the series offers a broad range of possibility within structure and narrative content. I find this painting especially striking because of the symbiotic relationship between the lone figure, hulking animal form, and the rolling landscape. While they don’t share the more distinct rocky texture evident in some of your other pieces, there is a rotund solidity to their mass. The alternating warm and cool color fluctuations move the viewer through the space and create a diffused atmospheric perspective. The paint quality is reminiscent of Cezanne, but with a fresh use of cooler, more saturated yellow and blue. I also find the dense and almost unyielding surfaces pose somewhat of a foil to the movement of the figures. The ox (horse?) glides effortlessly through the space while the female rider holds his tail to visually anchor her. Her glowing pale blue dress conforms to this concrete versus ephemeral relationship, as the shape is sculpted with the same lines as the low mountains in the background.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
