Curator’s Comments:

 

Dance is a vibrant, energetic piece, fitting the movement the title suggests.  The strong complementary red-violet and yellow color scheme punctuate the thrusting diagonal lines created by the gesticulating and waving figures.  I also see a faint primitivism in the handling of the large figure in the right half of the composition.  Neither quite male nor female, it looms large in the space. Also curious among the happy dancers is the darkly silhouetted figure in the foreground.  While closer to the viewer, we can’t make out an expression or intention. The mysteries of these figures ambiguous presences keep me looking long after I’ve taken in the jubilant scene.
