Curator’s Comment:

What a beautiful skull. The simplicity of the composition belies the subtle manipulation of color and scale, and the inherent associations with the fragility of life.  More than the other skull paintings, this piece seems to activate the entire space, and appear physically grounded in place. The deep pink and red ground has energetic associations of pulsating movement and life blood – visually transferred into the delicate pink reflective bone. The faintly warm brown interior space, though minimal value contrast, gives the surface the appearance of an almost translucent shell. I think another reason that I’m particularly drawn to this particular skull in the series is the appearance of the background throughout interstices in the form.  The red tonality peeks through in small fissures as well as the open beak- flowing through the objects skeletal frame. It’s also interesting that such a small creative could have imposing remains.
