Curator’s Comments:
This smallish looking paper collage shares some of the same color blocking and progression of linear shapes seen in your larger paintings, but I find the cut edges in this piece and in the other collage (2006) construct more geometric configurations. The staples actually introduce another repeated visual element. Rather than mask the fasteners of construction, the unadulterated staples act as short dashed lines. Both vertical and horizontal in orientation, the metal nonetheless has an industrial or ordinary utilitarian appearance. This seems another slight aesthetic departure from the more gestural handling in the open paintings. I find it interesting that the most articulated textures appear in the under layer of the piece. It’s as if viewing a small window of painterly excavation, where the aged or eroded spatial planes are covered with fresher, newer color.
