Curator’s Comment:

I enjoy the bright high chroma color scheme and cryptic iconography in these works.  The displaced human headed bovine is strangely inviting; mask like in the enormous open mouth.  The top of the head and eyes are cleverly omitted and then only reinserted with the bull and dog coming into the space on the right.  Just as the crooked row of houses on the horizon line mimic the rows of irregular teeth in the mouth; the work expertly recycles shapes and color in its playful motif.  I’m unsure of the role of the Egyptian styled hieroglyphics in the top arch.  It may be a constructed temple to the profane, or a reference to global communication with the large passing ships in the distance.  From a formal standpoint, I appreciate the burst of saturated blue highlight that move through the piece, constructing cast shadows underneath the animals’ legs, and reinvigorating thin outlines between the figures and the landscape.
