Curator’s Comment:
I like the continuation of the photographic image onto the painted ground in these pieces. It’s a nice play on illusionistic space, and our preconceptions of a traditionally conceived picture plane. That the image is slightly “off” in terms of texture and color makes this pairing obvious- no attempt was made to provide a seamless transition or camouflage. In fact, I wonder if the cast shadow from the top image cast onto the bottom exists because of a physical separation in space. The related image with the high chroma orange sky and darkened windmills has a similarly playful figure-ground relationship, but the saturation of color and contrast make the split between the two more jarring and provocative. The dissonance between the two spaces is most pronounced, of course, in the second image (designated as iphone jan. 12 006) While these juxtapositions are intriguing, I believe some of the photographs have subtleties that become overwhelmed by the imagery framing them, and could easily stand on their own.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
